Hand Function Self-Assessment

A self-check for adults to assess grip strength, dexterity, and daily hand function, useful after injury, surgery, or for arthritis, carpal tunnel and office-related hand problems.

This is a screening tool, not a medical diagnosis. Always consult a qualified occupational therapist.

1. Opening a tight jar lid

2. Carrying a grocery bag for 5 minutes

3. Buttoning a shirt

4. Picking up small objects like coins or pins

5. Typing or texting for more than 10 minutes

6. Writing a full page by hand

7. Using a knife and fork through a full meal

8. Holding a phone or book for 15 minutes

9. Pain or tingling in hand or wrist at night

10. Pain when gripping a steering wheel or tools

11. Washing your hair, tying shoelaces, or doing up a bra

12. Doing your job tasks (cashier, typing, lifting, driving)
