My parent is falling frequently at home
Two or three falls in the last year. Slipping in the bathroom, tripping on rugs, missing the edge of the step. Often caught by a family member before a hospital visit, but the fear is rising.
What this could mean
Falls in older adults usually combine muscle weakness, balance decline, vision change, medication side-effects, and unsafe home layout. Each fall raises the probability of a major fracture (especially hip) which dramatically changes quality of life.
What to do next
Book a home-safety assessment with a geriatric OT. Expect an inspection of bathroom, stairs, lighting, flooring and furniture height; recommendations for grab bars, non-slip mats, raised toilet seats, and better lighting; balance and strength exercises; and a review of medications that may cause dizziness. Costs RM200-500 for private, subsidised at MOH hospitals with a referral.
