Sensory Integration
The brain's ability to organise information from all the senses into smooth, useful responses.
Sensory integration is the neurological process by which the brain takes in information from the senses, sight, sound, touch, taste, smell, movement (vestibular) and body position (proprioception), and combines it to respond appropriately. When this process works well, a child can sit still in class, tolerate the label on their shirt, notice danger without being overwhelmed, and coordinate their body in games. When sensory integration is disrupted (as in Sensory Processing Disorder), everyday input can feel overwhelming, underwhelming, or confusing. Ayres Sensory Integration therapy, developed by Dr A. Jean Ayres, uses purposeful sensory-motor activities in a clinic setting to help the brain reorganise its responses.
