OT Assessment

The first structured session in which an occupational therapist identifies strengths, difficulties and goals before treatment begins.

An OT assessment is a structured evaluation, usually 60 to 90 minutes, in which the therapist interviews the client (or parent), observes task performance, and may use standardised tests to quantify function. For a child, this might cover developmental milestones, handwriting, sensory profile, play skills and school participation. For a stroke survivor, it covers bathing, dressing, cooking, home safety, driving readiness and return-to-work potential. The assessment produces a written report with functional goals, recommendations and a proposed treatment plan. In Malaysia, a private paediatric OT assessment typically costs RM150 to RM350; government hospitals charge RM5 to RM30 with a referral.
